HAVING tasted the "best atmosphere I've seen" in his two years at Newcastle United, Habib Beye has instructed his team-mates that a sustained repeat of Monday night's events must, first and foremost, be instigated by themselves.

Supporters present and even observers from further afield have been quick to hail the occasion of United's 3-1 win over Middlesbrough as the greatest Gallowgate has witnessed in some time.

EMBARRASSED by Newcastle United's current plight, Danny Guthrie is determined to avoid adding a relegation to his footballing CV.

The Magpies remain in a parlous state at the bottom of the Premier League table after failing to beat Portsmouth on Monday night.

Until then, many considered the visit of Pompey, and forthcoming home games against Middlesbrough and Fulham, to be United's lifeline. Those encounters against Boro and the Cottagers may yet spare Alan Shearer's men, but Monday's draw has made survival that much trickier, with plenty now having given up the ghost. Not Guthrie, however.

JOE Kinnear's heart bypass operation went well, Chris Hughton has confirmed, and Newcastle's interim manager remains on course to return to St James's Park after the two months of convalescence doctors originally ordered him to take.

The trouble, Hughton concedes, may be keeping him away that long. When you have lived and breathed football as long as Kinnear has, switching off is hard to do.

Facing the biggest challenge of his career on the sidelines right now, for Hughton it is impossible.
