DANNY SIMPSON has revealed that winning a Coca-Cola Championship medal with Newcastle United would mean even more to him than making his Manchester United debut.

That's quite a claim from the 21-year-old who was brought up through the ranks as a boyhood Red Devils fan under his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson.

He believes tonight's game with Derby County is not only one of United's most important matches of the season as they look to maintain their momentum after crushing Cardiff City, but also one of the most crucial of his own career.

WAYNE Routledge will never have a better stage to show off his talent as Chris Hughton declared his new signing is at the perfect point in his career to become a star at Newcastle United.

Routledge's journey has been one of what might have beens and unfulfilled potential, with eight clubs in five years telling the story of a young man who has never managed to settle before his January move from QPR.

However, Routledge's performance in the destruction of Cardiff City was one of the highlights of a memorable evening and the 25-year-old has added some much needed pace and creativity to a previously pedestrian midfield.

CHRIS HUGHTON has challenged his five-star Magpies to keep on making life difficult for him ahead of the trip to Pride Park tomorrow.

In recent seasons Newcastle United's host of managers have been left with plenty of problems to resolve on and off the field at St James' Park.

However, Hughton's biggest problem at the moment is who to leave out, with competition for places hotting up at Gallowgate after the 5-1 demolition of Cardiff City.

PETER Løvenkrands has admitted he does not know how he would have coped with the death of his father if he had not received such strong support from Newcastle United as he thanked the fans for helping him through a traumatic few months.

Løvenkrands came off the bench to score twice in the brilliant 5-1 thrashing of Cardiif City on Friday night and took his tally to eight goals in 20 appearances this season to underline his importance to the side.

But it was the reaction he got when coming on to the pitch which thrilled him as he spoke for the first time about how he has struggled to cope with the loss his father, and the numbing grief which has followed.

FABRICIO Coloccini says he would relish the chance to be Newcastle United's hero again tonight when Cardiff City head to St James' Park.

The Argentine international bagged the winning goal at the Cardiff City Stadium in South Wales back in September before angrily hitting out at claims that he was desperate to quit Newcastle in the summer.

Instead, and after going down in the record books as one of the players that took Newcastle down, he wants to become one of the team that delivered Premier League football back to Tyneside.

CHRIS Hughton is convinced Newcastle United have the mental strength, as well as the ability, to win promotion as he shrugged off the growing concern surrounding the quality of his team's performances since Christmas.

Newcastle have stuttered their way through January without producing a convincing display to back up their promotion credentials and have enjoyed just one league victory since December 20 even though their unbeaten record has been stretched to 14 matches.

With West Bromwich Albion winning 3-2 at Blackpool on Wednesday night, United's lead over third place has been slashed to just four points, and they desperately need a win against in-form Cardiff City - and their former Newcastle striker Michael Chopra - tonight to settle any nerves.

CHRIS HUGHTON says that Leon Best is "straining at the leash" to make his Newcastle debut against Cardiff City tomorrow night.

Toon boss Hughton has been delighted with the 23-year-old's application and attitude in training, and Best's first interview with the Chronicle on Tuesday night has also won the Republic of Ireland international some early plaudits.

Best has 10 goals this season and Hughton has revealed he is desperate for more.

PETER Løvenkrands has been handed further motivation to fire Newcastle United into the Premier League after being told he is still in Denmark's thinking for the World Cup finals.

Løvenkrands, who is still mourning the death of his father Bent, is back in contention for Friday's promotion six-pointer against Cardiff City and has been offered encouragement by the Danish national team management about his chances of forcing his way into their plans for South Africa.

The 30-year-old has not represented his country since coming off the bench in a 4-0 defeat of Liechtenstein in September 2007, but is one of around 50 players being monitored by national team manager Morten Olsen.

MICHAEL CHOPRA has revealed he can handle the heat ahead of his return to St James' Park on Friday night with Cardiff City.

But he has promised the Toon Army he will not celebrate if he finally scores at the ground in which he was once a season ticket holder.

The Geordie striker, who was linked with a move back in the January transfer window, was roundly booed by home fans when he last appeared on the hallowed turf at Gallowgate, but ended up falling out of favour with Sunderland fans too after missing a late sitter in last season's Tyne-Wear derby.

ALAN Smith believes Newcastle United's new signings will provide the team with a timely lift after a stuttering start to 2010.

Although Newcastle remain top of the table - a position they have held for the last three months - their lead has been cut to four points, winning just one of their last five Championship games.

That dip in form has given hope to promotion rivals Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion, although both have suffered slip-ups of their own since the start of the year to leave Newcastle out in front.
