Steven Taylor in race to face Sheffield United

STEVEN TAYLOR is facing a race against time to be fit for Newcastle United's testing Coca-Cola Championship trip to Sheffield United next Monday night.

And with Zurab Khizanishvili set to be banned for the Bramall Lane encounter due to his red card against Doncaster, United could be facing another defensive crisis.

Danny Simpson is also struggling with an ankle injury, while Fabricio Coloccini, too, was forced out of Saturday's win over Doncaster due to persistent groin problems.

Taylor has not appeared for United since October 3 and United have certainly missed his dependability in the back four, not to mention his experience, with Newcastle conjuring up just one win in five.

The Whitley Bay lad has been out with a hamstring problem and, due to the serious nature of the injury, is still a major doubt for the game with the Blades.

A source close to Taylor told the Chronicle: "Steven is desperate to play in every game for Newcastle.
