Tis the season to be wary

IT MAY well be a time where turkeys are looking over their shoulders but, as far as Newcastle United are concerned, there is another reason to be wary.

For not only is the time for crackers and turkey sandwiches almost upon us, but also the hectic holiday period in football over Christmas.

United will be aware that once Christmas has passed and the glut of games that goes with it, if they are still in the same position as they are now, then they are in great danger of being relegated.

United will be aware that once Christmas has passed and the glut of games that goes with it, if they are still in the same position as they are now, then they are in great danger of being relegated.

I know that Joe Kinnear has come in and tightened things up, and he has done a good job in doing so.

But what Newcastle need more than anything are wins, three-point hauls from games and, hopefully, back-to-back.

Or I'm afraid we could be talking about going into a different division in 2009.

If you look at the table, there are several teams in the shake-up.

It is tight, but every other team will feel they are capable of getting wins, and if you get caught cold, you can be deep in the mire and sinking.

I won't worry too much just now, but my main point is that if we are still in this position in one month, then we are in trouble.

Looking back at the game with Stoke, I have to say I was just so fed up on the way home on Saturday night - and so were the fans.

All of them.

We were dominant in the first half and didn't look like a bad side, but even when Stoke pulled one back, there was still a chance.

We were still in control and the game was there for the taking.

Until we fell for the usual three-card trick, that is.

First a free-kick, as harsh as it was, then the usual former player coming up with a goal in Abdoulaye Faye, and all of it in the last minute to make it a real kick in the teeth.

Hopefully against Portsmouth there will be a chance to take something, and I sincerely hope it's the start of getting us out of the doldrums at Fratton Park.

Yes Bob you're correct we need wins. This year the relegation battle is between us, WBA, Blackburn, West Spam, mackems, Stoke and maybe Wigan in my view. Out of them WBA are possibly the worst team, West Ham could be next if they are forced to start selling off players, we could be third. If we can keep our players fit then we won't go down but 2 or 3 injuries like we have right now in midfield and we have no-one to come in, hence we look unbalanced and start loosing games. Keegan was right to walk, the squad isn't anywhere near good enough, ashley hasn't a clue.
