Jonas has pace and passion to take over the mantle from Toon wing wizards of old

WE'VE rejoiced in the delights of David Ginola and Chris Waddle. Men of balance, flair and radar vision.

They were followed by Laurent Robert, he of the booming shot and extravagance.

Much further back in my childhood I marvelled at Mitch, the Bobby Dazzler of Wor Jackie's three-time FA Cup winning team.

All left-wingers in the black-and-white of United. All good contributors to the cause.

Now we have a new man on the block about to make his competitive home debut tomorrow afternoon.

Jonas Gutierrez looks like one of Genghis Khan's marauding warriors with his swishing pony tail and angular features.

Gutierrez is the prince awaiting his coronation.

From what we have fleetingly seen he can become a folk hero in this football-obsessed corner of our land.

It is essential in the modern game to possess pace - and the lanky Argentine has it in spades.

More fleet of foot than Ginola and Waddle, who relied on skill to trouble a defender.

So did Bobby Mitchell, who swayed like a cobra rising from its basket but, as with Sir Stanley Matthews, often dribbled at walking pace towards his prey.

Jonas is all flying feet and hair. He runs on the wind but with balance and poise.

A player with a footballing brain, apparently tireless, and - unlike Ginola who would toss his hair disdainfully at the thought - willingly tracks back to help out team-mates.

If Gutierrez has a fault - and hasn't everyone outside of the true geniuses like Pele, Best and Maradona - it's that he doesn't score enough goals.

No matter, if Gutierrez opens the door, others are paid to finish the job.

Such as, when he eventually returns, Michael Owen, who doesn't join in build up too much but awaits the ammunition to load a lethal gun.

The worry is not to build up Gutierrez too much, too early. The season is but young.

We witness every November 5 the soaring fire- cracker of many vivid colours that quickly falls to earth.

However, this is not a youngster but a seasoned pro who definitely has the equipment to do damage and the sort of charismatic presence Geordies have always loved in their footballers.

He was the excitement in a wonderful team display at Manchester United.

Now comes the opening home fixture of the season and opposition in the shape of Bolton Wanderers, who must be beaten if progress is to be made.

United have always been unpredictable, up and down week-in, week-out.

When they last won at Old Trafford back in 1972, they had the previous week been humiliated by non-league Hereford in the FA Cup.

What is not required tomorrow is a slip-up against a team expected to finish beneath Newcastle.

Gutierrez, Oba Martins and Charles N'Zogbia provide the pace in United's side which at times last season looked very laboured.

However, Kevin Keegan requires a left-back, big time.

Jose Enrique has not convinced and N'Zogbia isn't a natural defender. His assets are best employed further up the field.

Gutierrez's fellow countryman Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Guthrie also join the Premier parade at St James's for the first time.

Coloccini is a £10m central defender who doesn't speak English but must somehow find a way to communicate with his back four.

Guthrie was on loan at Bolton last season, of course, so they know all about his neat and tidy play.

This particular bunch of Wanderers have been brought together by Gary Megson, a one-time Magpie, and convincingly beat Stoke on the opening day, although that ought not to hold too many terrors for us.

Victory is required tomorrow, not least because optimism gained at Old Trafford must not be wasted, and another fierce away test awaits against Arsenal.

Perhaps the G-force will blow away any lingering doubts.
